Choosing the right major means finding a program that sparks your curiosity, aligns with your values, and prepares you for a career that matters. For Elizabeth Chase, an Environmental Science & Sustainability (ES&S) major from Cicero, NY, Clarkson University delivered exactly that.

From outdoor labs and field research to international sustainability trips and award-winning student projects, Elizabeth’s journey through the ES&S program is proof of how Clarkson combines hands-on learning, passionate faculty, and a commitment to the environment.

Environmental Science: A Major That Adapts to You

Clarkson’s Environmental Science & Sustainability program is intentionally flexible, allowing students to explore topics in science, policy, law, biology, and beyond. Elizabeth highlighted how courses like Ecology, Limnology, and Energy Policy created a cohesive education across disciplines.

“I’ve had classes take place outside in the Clarkson Woods, in a lab, and in traditional lecture halls. This major involves so many different areas, and you can personalize your studies depending on your interests or even try a bit of everything while finding your path.”

The major’s updated title—Environmental Science & Sustainability—reflects this interdisciplinary strength and its relevance in tackling today’s global challenges.

Learning Sustainability Beyond the Classroom

One of Elizabeth’s favorite experiences was the BY 224 Ecology Lab, taught by Professor Tom Langen. Each class took place outdoors, with fieldwork like bird and tree identification or studying edge effects in forest ecosystems.

“Some mornings we’d walk through the Munter Trails at 8 a.m., observing wildlife and ecosystems in real time. Other days, we conducted experiments—like estimating population sizes of pill bugs using the mark-recapture technique or measuring forest predation patterns. It was the perfect blend of peaceful and informative.”

Research That Makes a Real-World Impact

Clarkson students don’t just learn about environmental science—they contribute to it. Elizabeth conducted undergraduate research with Professor Katie Benson on environmental DNA (eDNA) and biodiversity detection.

Their project compared traditional bird surveying with eDNA metabarcoding and even led to a presentation at the Clarkson Ignite Project Expo, where Elizabeth won Best Presentation in Sustainability. The project is now being turned into a scientific manuscript, and the research inspired the development of a new course focused on eDNA in the Adirondacks.

“Getting involved in research was the best thing I did at Clarkson. It expanded my knowledge in a cutting-edge field, helped me grow professionally, and gave me opportunities I never thought were possible.”

Global Perspective, Local Passion

Elizabeth also participated in the UNIV 399 Global Business Experience, traveling to Munich, Germany, and Reykjavík, Iceland, to study sustainable business models and geothermal energy.

“I had just finished Energy Policy with Professor Steve Bird and couldn’t believe how aligned the trip was with what I’d learned. We met with companies like Allianz and Oceancluster to discuss real-world environmental solutions.”

This opportunity not only gave Elizabeth global insight—it also helped her form lasting friendships and professional connections across cultures.

A Supportive Community That Cares

Outside of the classroom, Elizabeth is involved in the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society, Sustainability Club, and Peace Action Club. Her network of like-minded peers and supportive professors helped shape her academic journey and her career outlook.

“As my time at Clarkson comes to an end, I truly feel like I can help shape the planet’s future. The knowledge and connections I’ve gained here have been life-changing.”
