Choosing the right major doesn’t just shape your college experience—it influences your entire future. For Lindsey Hassett, a Computer Engineering student from Rochester, NY, Clarkson University offered the perfect balance of academic challenge, collaboration, and hands-on learning. Through robotics research, team-based labs, and peer mentorship, Lindsey discovered opportunities that pushed her both technically and personally—all while preparing for a career in one of today’s fastest-growing fields.
Here’s why Clarkson’s Computer Engineering program might be the right fit for you.
Real Research, Real Robotics
One standout feature of Clarkson’s Computer Engineering program is early access to undergraduate research. Lindsey jumped in during her senior design project (EE416), working under Professor Dr. Chen Liu on robotics research.
“Our project focused on using LiDAR and the SLAM algorithm for autonomous navigation,” she explained. “That opportunity helped me dive deeper into robotics, and I’ve continued working on it as a research assistant. It’s been an incredible way to apply classroom concepts to real-world challenges.”
Additionally, Lindsey’s success in research reflects a broader culture of innovation at Clarkson. Want to see what other students are working on? Check out our Ignite Research Showcase feature here.

Hands-On Learning from Day One with Computer Engineering
Clarkson’s Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) courses are known for being hands-on, team-oriented, and packed with lab time. Lindsey emphasized how courses like EE260 (Embedded Systems), EE365 (Advanced Digital Design), and EE316 (CE Junior Lab) give students practical experience with microcontrollers, FPGAs, and other real-world tools.
“These classes helped me build confidence using lab equipment like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers. The projects are team-based, so you’re developing both technical and collaboration skills you’ll need in the workplace.”
Teaching & Mentorship: Giving Back
Lindsey’s experience wasn’t limited to the classroom. For six semesters, she served as a TA for ES250 (Electrical Science) and supported other courses as a project evaluator and grader. These roles helped her grow professionally while making a real difference for her peers.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding to meet and mentor underclassmen. I love being able to give helpful feedback and support future engineers—it’s a great way to give back to the program that’s done so much for me.”
