Starting college is a big step—but at Clarkson University, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. That’s where the First Year Cup (FYC) comes in: a semester-long, action-packed challenge that brings first-year students together through fun events, friendly competition, and a shared sense of community.

Launched in Fall 2018, the First Year Cup is designed exclusively for students living in first-year housing. It’s more than just a campus tradition—it’s your chance to jump into Clarkson life, make friends, and win awesome prizes. To learn more about what to expect when you first come to Clarkson, read our blog post about Move-In and Convocation.

What Is the First Year Cup?

The First Year Cup is a dynamic competition where first-year students team up by residence hall floor. As the semester unfolds, teams earn points by attending campus events, engaging with campus life, and showing their Clarkson spirit.

Whether you’re diving into an intramural game, showing up for a diversity workshop, or joining in a spirit week activity, every event is an opportunity to earn points—and make memories.

What Are Living Learning Communities?

At Clarkson, first-year students don’t just live in residence halls—they live in Living Learning Communities (LLCs). These themed communities group students by shared interests, such as pre-health, outdoor adventure, business, or gaming. Located in “The Quad”, LLCs help students transition into college life by offering custom programming focused on academic, social, and personal growth.

LLCs provide instant connection and support, making it easier to make friends and get involved. Current themes include:

  • Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE)
  • Foodies
  • Cultural Enrichment
  • FIRST Robotics
  • Pre-Health Professionals
  • The Artists’ Guild
    …and more!

Plus, all LLCs compete together in the First-Year Cup, turning community-building into a fun and spirited challenge. Want to see what first-year living looks like at Clarkson? Watch the video below showcasing the freshman dorms on campus.

Why It Matters

The program was created to encourage new students to:

  • Make social connections beyond their roommates
  • Explore campus resources and events
  • Develop school pride and teamwork

It helps students break out of their comfort zones and build lasting friendships from day one.

How It Works

Point System

  • Students earn points by scanning their Knight Pass at official events.
  • Points are adjusted by floor size to keep things fair.
  • Students must actively participate (no scanning and dashing!).

Events You’ll Love

Each semester, the FYC includes a variety of events like:

  • Intramural sports tournaments
  • Diversity and inclusion programs
  • Food tastings and dining events
  • Speed team and club showcases
  • Spirit Week challenges
  • Residence hall competitions

Events evolve every year based on student feedback—so they’re always fresh and exciting.

What’s in It for You?

  1. First Place: Dinner with Clarkson’s President + priority housing in Farrisee Hall (no lottery!)
  2. Second Place: Custom Clarkson swag (sweaters, hats, and more)
  3. Third Place: A catered food party for your whole floor

Originally, winners went on trips to places like Syracuse, but based on student input, the rewards were updated to better serve what students actually want: practical perks and personalized recognition.

FYC by the Numbers

  • Participation Start-of-Term: 90–95% of first-year students (roughly 500 students)
  • Mid-Semester Engagement: Still strong at 70–75%
  • Who Can Join: Only first-year students in campus housing
  • Who Hosts Events: Campus departments, clubs, and student leaders—with coordination from Residence Life

Why Prospective Students Should Care

The First Year Cup sets Clarkson apart. Many colleges offer orientation programs—but few offer a student-led, interactive competition that evolves every year based on what students want.

Joining Clarkson means:

Meet the Team Behind FYC

Clarkson’s Residence Life Office runs the show, with Program Coordinator Demetri Cummings leading the effort. He works closely with student leaders and clubs to keep everything running smoothly, from event setup to scanning Knight Passes and tracking points.

“The goal is to push students to get out, learn about themselves, and fully experience all that Clarkson has to offer.” – Demetri Cummings

A Clarkson Tradition That Builds More Than Points

From club football games turned campus-wide events to themed spirit weeks that get everyone involved, the First Year Cup is more than a contest—it’s a launchpad. Students come for the prizes but leave with lasting friendships, stronger confidence, and a deeper connection to campus. Are you ready to take the challenge?
