Choosing a major is about more than just classes—it’s about discovering where your curiosity can lead and how you want to change the world. For Kouboura Abakar Khatir Adam, a Chemical Engineering student from Utica, NY, Clarkson University became the place where theory met real-world purpose.

Here’s how Clarkson’s Chemical Engineering program empowered her to grow as both a scientist and a leader.

Apply What You Learn to Real Problems

One of the most exciting parts of the Chemical Engineering program is how students get hands-on with complex concepts. Kouboura experienced this firsthand while researching dye-sensitized solar cells. She explored how photo-anode active areas influence current-voltage characteristics—work that brought together chemistry, physics, and engineering.

“This hands-on work reinforced my understanding while contributing to renewable energy research. It felt meaningful to apply classroom learning to sustainability innovation.”

Real Research Starts Early

Clarkson offers Chemical Engineering majors the chance to take part in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). During her sophomore summer, Kouboura conducted research under the guidance of a professor and graduate mentor. Through this experience, she honed her technical and lab skills, presented at multiple showcases, and built the confidence to communicate complex ideas effectively. STEM Competitions That Build More Than Résumés

Clarkson hosts business and STEM competitions that challenge students to innovate. Kouboura’s team, Connect-4, participated in the STEM QuESTS Challenge and created K–12 lesson plans focused on hands-on learning. The result? First place and a $5,000 prize.

“The competition helped me develop not just technical ideas, but my ability to lead, collaborate, and communicate across disciplines.”
