As artificial intelligence continues to transform industries and drive innovation, Clarkson University continues to prepare future-ready graduates through the launch of a new Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) minor.

Set to launch in Fall 2026, the interdisciplinary program will provide students with practical experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning while building the analytical and technical skills increasingly sought across today’s workforce. Open to all students, the minor blends foundational concepts with applied learning, enabling students to explore how emerging technologies can be used to address challenges within their own fields of study.

“AI is no longer limited to one discipline,” says Faraz Hussain, associate professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science at Clarkson University. “It’s becoming an essential tool across engineering, science, business, healthcare, manufacturing and many other fields. We launched this minor because students need practical, hands-on experience to understand not only how AI works, but how to apply it responsibly to the problems they’ll solve in their own careers.”

Through coursework in probability and statistics, linear algebra, computer programming, machine learning, data analysis, model evaluation and responsible AI practices, students will learn how to identify patterns in data, develop and assess models, interpret results and make informed, data-driven decisions. The curriculum emphasizes both technical proficiency and real-world problem-solving, preparing students to apply AI tools across a wide range of disciplines and industries.

A Minor for Every Major

One of the program’s defining features is its accessibility. Designed to complement a wide range of majors, the minor helps students enhance their academic studies with practical AI and machine learning expertise, regardless of their previous experience with computer science or programming.

Particularly well-suited for students interested in artificial intelligence, data analytics, robotics, automation, software development, engineering innovation and applied research, the minor offers opportunities to explore specialized topics such as deep learning, computer vision, biomedical AI, mobile robotics, biometrics, pattern recognition, high-performance computing, AI in manufacturing, and the ethical implications of AI.

Whether studying engineering, computer science, business, mathematics, science or another discipline, students can build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to apply emerging technologies within their chosen field.

Why AI Education Matters Now

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries around the globe, the need for education in this rapidly evolving field has never been greater.

Clarkson developed the AI/ML minor in response to growing demand for professionals who understand not only how AI works, but also how to apply it responsibly and effectively.

From healthcare and manufacturing to energy, finance and transportation, organizations increasingly rely on AI to analyze data, automate processes and support decision-making. As these technologies become more integrated into everyday operations, employers are seeking graduates who can combine domain expertise with practical machine learning and data analytics skills.

Beyond technical proficiency, the program helps students demonstrate to employers that they can bridge expertise in their chosen discipline with the ability to leverage emerging technologies.

Innovation Starts at Clarkson

For students who are curious about artificial intelligence but unsure where to begin, Clarkson’s message is simple: curiosity is enough.

The program is designed to help students build confidence, knowledge, and practical experience one step at a time. Through hands-on learning and interdisciplinary exploration, students will gain the skills needed to understand and apply emerging technologies in meaningful ways.

As AI continues to shape the future, Clarkson is creating new opportunities for students to turn curiosity into capability and innovation into impact.
