About the Author

Hello, I’m Richard, a Clarkson School student of 2026. I had been planning on applying to the Clarkson School program since roughly 2020, and I was accepted as a high school junior. I chose this program because I was not challenged enough in high school, and I had hoped to further my education sooner. I’m always happy to chat to prospective students and talk about my experience here. Reach out to me via our ambassador website!

What Is the Clarkson School Program?

The Clarkson School program is the second-oldest early college program in the United States. But why should a student give up their senior year of high school to come to college early?

While some people believe it might not be worth it, there are several great benefits to the program, including the opportunity to get a head start on advanced learning, meet and interact with like-minded students, and feel engaged in your classes. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. TCS also provides students with better living spaces, closer connections with professors, and scholarship opportunities simply for applying.

On top of all that, through the Clarkson School, students can engage in club and recreational activities that most high schools cannot offer. Overall, TCS is a wonderful experience and opportunity for high school seniors to advance their learning early and build lifelong friendships.

Get a Head Start on Your College Education

Let’s begin with advancing your student’s learning through the Clarkson School. By joining the program, you will be admitted to college-level courses related to whichever major you declare. Essentially, you’ll start working toward your degree a year early.

But do not worry—you will not be missing any high school education. Our counselor selects courses from Clarkson’s directory so that all classes count as dual credits. You’ll finish your high school diploma while simultaneously starting your college degree.

Students experience the end of high school with the freedoms and benefits of a college student for a year. Parents also have peace of mind knowing that safety systems are in place to help students transition smoothly into early college life.

Build a Community With Like-Minded Students

Another major advantage is the opportunity to interact with fellow Clarkson School students who share similar interests and goals.

Because Clarkson School students often live on campus, you enter a close-knit community of TCS students and the broader Clarkson population. Through clubs, organizations, and orientation activities, students quickly find their niche. Most students form strong friendships within their first weeks on campus.

More Engaging College-Level Classes

College courses tend to be more engaging than traditional high school classes. Many students who consider TCS feel bored or under-challenged in high school.

At Clarkson, professors structure their classes to keep students actively engaged while avoiding overwhelming workloads. Small class sizes allow professors to connect with students individually, ensuring that learning remains productive and supportive. Professors also become valuable mentors who can help students navigate academic challenges.

Comfortable and Convenient Living Spaces

One of the most appreciated benefits of the Clarkson School is the living environment. TCS students live in a dedicated dorm building separate from the traditional freshman residence halls.

Each room is a double with its own private bathroom shared by two students. This is a significant upgrade compared to many freshman dorms, which typically have shared bathrooms on each floor. The building is also centrally located, allowing students to reach most campus locations within a few minutes.

Built-In Scholarship Opportunities

Another major advantage for Clarkson School students is the scholarship support offered upon acceptance.

Students receive scholarships that apply to their entire undergraduate degree, covering a substantial portion of tuition. Additionally, because Clarkson School admissions operate on a rolling basis, students can apply early for additional scholarships before many others even know about them. Some scholarships are also reserved specifically for TCS students, increasing the chances of receiving financial aid.

Clubs, Activities, and Campus Life

Clarkson offers far more extracurricular opportunities than most high schools. Students can participate in club sports, theater, radio, television broadcasting, and many other organizations.

These clubs often have larger budgets and broader opportunities compared to high school activities, allowing students to explore interests at a deeper level.

Strong Support Systems for Students

The Clarkson School also provides an extensive support system for students adjusting to college life.

Dedicated staff members include House Advisors (HAs), an Area Coordinator, and program directors who focus specifically on helping TCS students succeed. Beyond that, the broader Clarkson staff and the Student Health and Counseling Center provide resources ranging from academic guidance to mental health support. Students have access to both on-site and online counseling services, ensuring that help is always available when needed.

Final Thoughts: Is Early College Worth It?

Some people may believe dedicating a senior year of high school to an early college program is a mistake. However, the Clarkson School program offers numerous benefits—from advancing your education early and connecting with like-minded students to enjoying better living spaces, scholarships, and engaging extracurricular activities.

For motivated students who want to challenge themselves and begin their undergraduate journey early, Clarkson University’s early college program can be an incredibly rewarding opportunity.
