Are you curious about fraternities and sororities on campus? On this Student Life podcast episode I interviewed Michael Walsh, a Phi Kappa Sigma brother, and Allison Purdy, a sister of Theta Phi Alpha.

Michael and Allison both joined their respective organizations as first-year students, and have loved being a part of them ever since. They discuss the history of their organizations, and their histories on campus.

Though both groups are social, they both have several fundraising events for charities of their choosing. In this case, Phi Kappa Sigma is partnered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Theta Phi Alpha raised money to donate to the family of one of the victims of the Schoharie Limo Crash, a Theta Phi Alpha alumna.

They both spoke openly about their favorite parts of Fraternity and Sorority Life. In response to my question, “What is your favorite thing you have gotten out of your organization?” they both spoke about how they have enjoyed getting to meet people they never would have met if they hadn’t joined their organizations.

Michael and Allison both give advice to incoming students about joining fraternities and sororities. Purdy says, “I think it is really good to look at all four houses we have on campus, and get to know the people…. I’d also really recommend talking to the RC.” She say she thinks the best thing to do is to go to all the events you can to ensure you have a good look at all of the houses and give them a fair chance. Walsh says, “If it is not for you, do not feel pressured to stay.” He talks about how joining fraternities and sororities isn’t for everyone, and you don’t have to join one if you don’t want to, but the experience has been valuable for him.
